description
SHIFTING LANDSCAPES RIFT WITH CHANGE ARE UNSETTLING. THE DYNAMIC DISTRACTS THE ORDINARY. THIS UPHEAVAL OF THE ORDINARY DISTURBS AND CONFUSES. NEW ORLEANS IS STILL A STATE OF CONFUSION EVEN TEN MONTHS AFTER KATRINA. PERHAPS THE ONLY THING ORDINARY ABOUT THE CITY IS THE EVER-PRESENT DYNAMIC – HERE LONG BEFORE KATRINA, BUT AT A SCALE COMPATIBLE WITH THE LIFE WITHIN. THE CITY IS BORDERED BY WATER. TO THE NORTH IS THE LAKE, TO THE SOUTH IS THE RIVER. THE TWO FORM A CRESCENT – THE CRESCENT CITY.

THE HARD EDGES OF THE CITY HAVE BEEN STERNLY PLACED, UPROOTING THE NATURAL ORDER. WITH LEVEES AND RIP-RAP WALLS, HARD ARMORING AND MAN-MADE BORDERS TO THE LIQUID LANDSCAPE, THE CITY HAS SOMEHOW EXPANDED. A COMPRESSION DEFINES THE CITY, SQUEEZING IT INTO PLACE UNTIL IT GUSHES OUT ONTO THE LESS STRINGENT LAND-SCAPE. NEW ORLEANS EXISTS WITHIN THE IN BETWEEN.

THE LIMITED HIGH GROUND OF THE HOLY CROSS NEIGHBORHOOD NEEDS TO BE FORTIFIED AS WELL. ADJACENT TO THE LEVEE WALL IS A RAISED PLATEAU OF EARTH – AN EARTH BERM. A CONCRETE FLOOD CHANNEL IS BUILT AS PART OF THE RIVER LEVEE BACK-UP SYSTEMS. THE CHANNEL, ONCE FILLED WITH SOD, BECOMES A CONSTRUCTED WETLAND. THESE SYSTEMS ARE NEEDED TO SUPPORT A WEAKENING AND OUTDATED INFRASTRUCTURE. A SYSTEM DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PREVIOUS CENTURY DOES NOT SUPPORT THE LIFE OF TODAY.

THE EARTH BERM FORMS A STREET FOR A FAMILIAR TYPOLOGY. THE CAMELBACK HOUSE IS HERE INVERTED, THE FULL-LENGTH FLOOR OCCURS ON THE UPPER LEVEL, AND THE HALF-LEVEL SITS SUNKEN INTO THE EARTH BERM. THE ROW OF HOUSES OVERLOOKS A COMMUNITY FARM. AND BEYOND THE FARM IS THE GREENHOUSE. THE GREENHOUSE IS PART COMMUNITY GROW SHELTER AND PART LIVING MACHINE. A SERIES OF TANKS ARE USED TO CLARIFY THE WATER CAPTURED AND USED ON SITE. THE CLARIFIED WATER IS THEN RE-USED. THE BULK OF THIS WATER COMES FROM THE APARTMENT BUILDING ON THE NORTHERN EDGE OF THE SITE, ACROSS THE FARM FROM THE HOUSES. THE APARTMENT STRUCTURE IS ELEVATED, PROVIDING REFUGE FOR RESIDENTS SHOULD THE NEED ARISE.

THE COMMUNITY FARM PROVIDES ENOUGH SHARES TO FEED THE FAMILIES ON SITE. IN FACT, THERE IS ABUNDANCE. EACH WEEK THE COMMUNITY CENTER IS CONVERTED INTO A FARMER’S MARKET, WHERE LOCAL FARMERS WILL SELL THEIR CROPS – PRODUCE FROM THIS FARM AS WELL. THUS, THE COMMUNITY IS SELF SUSTAINING. WATER, ENERGY AND FOOD PRODUCTION ARE PROVIDED ON SITE. THE LIVING MACHINE IS ALSO OVERSIZED, AND CAN SUPPORT ADDITIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE FROM NEIGHBORING PROPERTIES. WATER TREATMENT FOR THE COMMUNITY ALONG WITH THE SURPLUS OF FOOD IS SOLD AS SHARED INCOME FOR THE RESIDENTS.

THE SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY IS THE FIRST OF MANY FOR THE LOTUS CITY.
