The focus of the project is to rehabilitate the triangular site in Mid-City on which the old Dixie Brewery building sits (Tulane and N. Tonti streets) to create a community and commercial space with a focus on civic engagement. In order to offer the community a central point of connection during good times and bad, this proposal includes such elements as a Katrina memorial, an open-air market, a dance theatre, a gallery, a childcare center, storage for bicycles, and emergency shelter space. Using the brewing process as inspiration, the plan aims to connect the pedestrian with the built environment through a system of ramps and sidewalks. Working with the existing grid of the typical New Orleans block structure, the plan suggests renovating and enlarging existing housing to increase the residential density of the area. |
