Creating an addition to the existing E. H. Phillips Middle School in the St. Bernard Housing complex, this project proposes a flexible educational and community environment that allows for expansion as residents return to the area. The project addresses the lack of resources in the city by creating a multi-functional building that includes elements such as a community hub and kitchen, as well as centers for media presentation and first-aid and legal services. A donut-shaped building encircling a courtyard is the primary design concept for the community center. Pre-fabricated panels attach to classrooms to provide for flexible space planning as the needs of the school change. This project goes beyond the “temporary is good enough” solution of trailer additions to school plants and gives both residents and students of the area more permanent solutions for community needs.
