Exposing the mistakes of man, this project proposes building a cemetery on the east side of the industrial canal. By building a cemetery at this unique site, this project recognizes the destruction by Katrina by engaging the issue of death and the reality of how lives were cut short. Inspired by the tradition of the jazz funeral and parading in the streets, the cemetery links the strengths of New Orleans culture with the reality that Katrina ended too many lives too soon. The complex includes an observation deck, a funeral chapel, and a mediation park all surrounded by a moat, reminding people of the power of water as a force in nature. |
