The City of New Orleans is considering selling the Lafitte Corridor for private
economic development. Some of the land is being considered for sale to a movie studio, which is proposed
to look like the image above. However, we believe that protecting the open space along the Lafitte
Corridor can root the surrounding communities in place against negative political and economic change.
We envision the Lafitte Corridor as a home for New Orleans' rich culture. As residents celebrate their
local traditions, art, and heritage, they can attract local businesses and bring economic development
to the larger area. Open space along the Lafitte Corridor has the potential to serve neighboring
residents, connect the corridor to neighborhoods beyond Mid-City, and bring nature to the city for all
to enjoy. We see our ideas as one of many possible starting points for discussion of the Lafitte
Corridor, and hope they spur feedback, ideas, and debate from the surrounding communities and beyond.
Our vision is meant as a platform for dialogue, and is not a concrete plan. |
