In an effort to incorporate a New Orleans’ musical traditions into the rebuilding process, this project proposes moving the annual Jazz Fest from the fairgrounds to Tulane Avenue. The new Jazz Fest site would extend from Claiborne to Carrollton avenues, following a linear path leading directly into the French Quarter. The proposal incorporates existing and new buildings and parks to house the concert stages; food and craft vendors would line the streets. The goal is to bring the economic benefit of Jazz Fest ($300 million in 2004) directly into the city’s urban structure. The project highlights the redevelopment of currently abandoned and unused buildings not only to rehabilitate them but also to renovate the entire downtrodden area. Making use of such a central location for Jazz Fest would encourage more pedestrian attendance at the festival and would also increase the use of existing landmark nodes such as Louis Armstrong Park. |
